Broken Contract Beta Rules

Art by Geng Gendall

This is the Beta set of the Broken Contract rules. As a Beta rule set it is expected that there will be some inconsistencies, typos, mistakes, and the like. It has been through an editor so the typos should be minimal but there may be areas that require greater clarity, and guaranteed there will be an inconsistency here or there. Please read it, play it with proxies, and provide as much feedback as you can. Thanks and enjoy!

XXIII. Assembling the Cast - Officer Moerta

Officer Sarie Moerta by Geng Gendall

Officer Moerta has a lot to prove. It took the hard work and collective effort of her entire family to secure her a Security Officer Contract instead of work as another Agri-dome worker or worse. Family aside, Moerta is a green rookie just out of her probation period and her fellow Prods view her as an unknown. She is given the most dangerous work and the least support so she can prove she has what it takes to keep the Tracted in line. Ambition and sense of responsibility allow her to put aside any softer feelings and prove she belongs. Each swing of her baton is step toward the power and respect she intends to use to bring her family closer to climbing out of poverty and want. The Tracted themselves are not aware of her history but view her as a weak link and push back against her authority in a hundred ways, some overt, others more subtle. Whether she will stand the test or break has yet to be seen.

XXII. Assembling the Cast - Trest the Gen-Mod Brute

Trest, the Gen-Mod Brute art by Geng Gendall

Tracted life is a desperate struggle. Trapped in constant state of poverty the workers make dreadful bargains to balance their debts. The Gen-Mod program is one of those options. Volunteers undergo intensive medical and scientific procedures to produce tailor made children. At birth, they are taken away from their parents to trade-based orphanages that monitor and enhance physical and mental development through training and indoctrination. Trest is a result of the Brute mod program designed to create living tools to take the place of heavy equipment.
Despite the term "Brute", Trest is compassionate, thoughtful, and bright. The endless supply of steroids and drugs meant to tether him to his makers did not suppress his will to learn. His understanding of his life has fostered resentment and a burning will to break free. He knows withdrawal and dependency could kill him and though he feels great loyalty to his crew he also envies their natural humanity. In spite of the drugs in his system that dull his thoughts and feelings, he knows freedom will most likely be in death. If it secures true freedom for his friends, it will be a worthy sacrifice. Trest is a rare friend in that regard, making him beloved by the crew members who have taken the time to get to know him.

XXI. Assembling the Cast - Adesi Haddonis

Adesi Haddonis concept art by Geng Gendall.
Designers Note: If you're savvy and have been following the blog you will notice that this exact same art was used for Marius Bickler - the Former Prod. In all honesty, I shoehorned the Marius Bickler story line onto this art and it worked until I got the sculpt he didn't have that grizzled feel. He seemed more like a young man. One of the original character concepts I had somehow seemed more appropriate for this subtly Abercrombie-esque masked man.

Adesi Haddonis always thought that being good looking was a benefit, until he got to the Ferrum Sky mines. A recent immigrant from another world, also known as a Drop, Adesi arrived with a toned body, well nourished, and lacking scars or other marks of a hard life. His unusual state drew interest and speculation from both fellow miners and the Prods.  It was clear that he came from a privileged background, but the tale of his transition from that life to one of hardship and deprivation sparked the imagination of his peers.
He does what he can to blend in by focusing on his work and speaking little. He wears his breather mask in the company of others when he can and hides behind dirt and grime when he cannot.  Few have seen his true face, but beneath his mask he has startling good looks. When he does speak he clearly has had education and training above that normally provided to the indentured masses. With his good looks, sharp wit and eloquent speech he could easily charm most folks. He has opted to treat that charm more as a concealed weapon, likely for fear of having it taken away by a few baton strikes or a quiet beating from his comrades in the middle of the night. Adesi does his best to keep his head down before anyone else feels the need to push it into the floor.

Adesi Haddonis (The "Face")
Core: Actions: 3 Move: 3 Wounds: 3
Combat: Shoot: 5 Melee: 5 Strength: 5 Agility: 5
Brain: Intellect: 5 Perceive: 5 Psyche: 5 Medic: 5
Social: Lead: 6 Dealing: 5
Intangible: Recovery: 6 Faith: 6

Today Starts a Countdown

Breaker - Adesi Haddonis sculpted by Tim Barry.

Today, August 1st, begins my 31 day countdown to the Broken Contract - Deep Underground Kickstarter. This is both exciting and terrifying. I've invested so much time into getting this project off the ground. In addition to the time spent writing, re-writing, directing artists, reading and watching everything I can on building a successful Kickstarter, and just pushing numbers around, I've fully immersed myself in this project. I've managed to rally the help of friends and strangers to help realize my vision, but of course it isn't fully realized until there is money to truly make it happen.

August will be an endless collection of things to do lists in an effort to be as prepared as possible for the launch on Labor Day. My dry erase board will bear the brunt of these lists, a visual representation of accomplished tasks followed by an endless parade of more tasks. Yesterday I sent a barrage of emails to get more precise numbers on various odds and ends I would like to include or add as Stretch Goals. I talked to artists Sam and Geng, along with sculptor Tim Barry who are all working away on various art and sculpts. I secured my copy editor. So much has been done but there is always so much to do. I enter the next month with eagerness and devotion to the cause. Hopefully its enough.

Onward to freedom!

PS. Above is a brand new sculpt that appeared in my inbox today. More great work from Tim Barry. If you've really been paying attention you'll notice that this character's name changed. More on that in a couple days!
